This won't work for every series, but Overdrive may help—I keep records of loaned books in Calibre, though not the book files themselves. One series (Redwall) is a combination of physical books, eBooks, and Overdrive loans.

since I usually buy cheap or on sale, of the most expensive eBooks I have is the Kobo edition of the LOTR trilogy.
