Pretty specialist, though. Note that blocking the 5v power could prevent the transfer of data in some scenarios. Especially with some smart phones and tablets.
Most gadgets like phones, tablets or Kindles won't "detect" the Host computer if there is no 5V, as indeed the OP discovered from cutting the cable.
