As others have mentioned, your battery doesn't need to be protected. But there are some situations where a USB connection that blocks the 5v pin can be handy (like not wanting my OctoPi to try and power my 3D printer's display module). Taping or pulling the 5v+ pin out of a USB cable connector is not impossible by any means, but I took the easy way out and got a couple of these:

Pretty specialist, though. Note that blocking the 5v power could prevent the transfer of data in some scenarios. Especially with some smart phones and tablets.
