There are explanations I've seen basically boil down to the different coloured particles carrying different charges and external electrical fields which are used to manipulate the positioning of the particles. Not nearly as fast or easy as manipulating the black/white particles and at one point, I simply jotted down "and magic happens". Almost as much fun as learning about constellations in analog modems back when they were moving towards v.34.
