There is a finite amount of intelligence in a family. You start out with the kids adoring you, because you know everything. Then they turn into teenagers, and they of course know everything then. So you naturally have to degrade and end up knowing nothing at that point, to balance things out. Once they get out of school and begin living on their own, then they realize that you know more than they thought you did, so they grow a little more humble at that point to compensate.
