If I knew what criteria makes a book incompatible with Calibre then I could still buy books in an emergency, but for now I can't depend on being able to load a purchase into Calibre.

Calibre and all the usual plugins are up to the latest version no.
Option 3 still works. I just did removed the DRm from the free eBook you've linked.
