If I knew what criteria makes a book incompatible with Calibre then I could still buy books in an emergency, but for now I can't depend on being able to load a purchase into Calibre.

Calibre and all the usual plugins are up to the latest version no.
Since the book you linked to is free, I tested it for myself. I chose my Oasis 2 with firmware 5.15.1 for the device. As expected, I was able to remove the DRM without any issues.

So the problem is something about what you're doing or your setup. Ask over at the GitHub, and I'll see what's going on.
