Allow me to repeat myself, which I don't enjoy doing: did you try my suggestion, and if so, how did it fail to meet your needs? If you're seeking simplicity, my earlier suggestion seems simpler to me and also more robust than what you have come up with here.

Yes, I tried it, and the problem is this: if I have a book by authors "Walter M. Miller, Jr. & Jack C. Haldeman II & Gardner Dozois (ed.)", I end up with "Walter M. Miller@ Jr., Jack C. Haldeman II, Gardner Dozois (ed.)".
In the authors list on the Kobo the author names are sorted on the (ed.) and the Jr and the II, rather than on Dozois, Haldeman and Miller. This is the big problem. Jr, II, and (ed.) are not surnames, and I don't want to remember that Walter M. Miller is Jr when I'm searching for books by him. I have over 5000 books, so I want to be able to find things easily. It was having the first authors on my list filed under (ed.) that started me looking at this while plugboard issue.
But thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
