Meh. I don't see anything in the lyrics that make it inappropriate, and listeners should not be expected to learn the backstory of a song's creation to enjoy it. I suspect if Plant DIDN'T want it open to people interpreting it as just a love song, he was fully capable of writing more explicit meaning into it.
Perhaps it was his intention that people would embrace it this way so it would be a more long-lasting and widely popular tribute.

You can appreciate the beauty of the Taj Mahal without knowing it's a mausoleum.
