As for Cinderella's stepsisters? That was true to the original story as recorded by the Brothers Grimm where both sisters mutilated their feet trying to fit into the glass slipper. I'm not surprised it's based on the Grimm Brothers' version of the tale, but the way they present it is less horrifying to me somehow.
My favorite is The Tortoise and the Hare. They bet a bottle of schnapps on the race, then the hare literally runs itself to death after it loses. I first read that during one of my German classes during college.
