Such manuals do work on 6″ 300 dpi ereaders, but the Kindles (other than Scribe) are poorer than Kobo for that. I did have an Oasis till recently.
But PDF scans of old magazines, larger books and technical material is sometimes too large for 8″ and even a 10″ tablet can be awkward.

I've never had a problem reading PDF on a 9.7" iPad.
