Gogol is a very good writer and Dead Souls is a significant work (this is why it's usually part of Russian lit school curriculum.) Have you ever considered that it may have been over your 7th grade head?

No one liked it when we had to read it.
Although the same applies to any Russian classic. I didn't read one russian classic book I enjoyed or found it bearable at least (well maybe War and Peace had a few "OK moments" that were not about war).
But Gogol is probably one of the worst of them.
