See my reply at the "PocketBookTools" plugin thread: we can try fix the plugin. Any changes can go into the "Annotations" plugin as well.

For a Mac user, these Calibre plugins and the internal Notes app are your best bet now. Perhaps the cloud allows some syncing as well.

There's also AVATeR for Windows/Linux, but a Mac version will not arrive by some time. The M1 limitations w/r memory axed my purchasing plans, but perhaps I could borrow one. (If you're adventurous, I could build a viewer-only Windows binary, to be run with an emulator like CrossOver or Wine )
