Piers Anthony is a writer that was wildly popular previously, but seems to have just vanished from the public consciousness.
I never got into him, but knew people that loved his work. Not just the Xanth stuff either. I remember a story on This American Life about a kid that ran away from home, thinking he could live with Piers.
