Showing Book Covers and Browsing

I am a new Calibre user, so perhaps I am lacking an understanding of how the default features work. How are book covers displayed in Calibre? Is there a setting for displaying covers in a sidebar when a book row is selected? If so, how is that done?

Also, I watched a Calibre tutorial video that showed a way of browsing books visually through the display of their covers. However, I don't see the same button that would enable that browsing mode in my version of Calibre (I am using version 6.11). Can Calibre book entires only be browsed as text rows?
