So I just received a couple of Kindles I got off of eBay, a Kindle Touch (2011) and a Kindle PW1 (2012).
With the Kindle Touch, I am able to send a book from KU and download it via wifi directly onto the Touch, mount the Touch to my computer, and extract the AZW3 file, import into Calibre and remove DRM.
With the PW1, I can do the same as the Touch, however the files are split between AZW3 and AZW6 files. Unfortunately, I cannot merge/extract the images from the AWZ6 with the AZW3 file so the images are only in B&W after removing the DRM. I tried downgrading the PW1, but unfortunately after the downgrade completed, the PW1 was not able to download any books from KU. It seems that only the "latest" firmware 5.6.1.1 which splits books with AZW3 and AZW6 files are the only working option if you're going to use the PW1 route.
