I managed to solve the problem! ...which was my poor eyesight and lack of attention to detail as some of the manga were in fact CBR as opposed to CBZ. No idea why they used different formats for random elements in the same series but at least I can now simply read them on Nickel.
And I must say this little episode was not a
complete waste of time in the end as I am now running the latest version of KOReader
