It seems to me that a lot of innovation has come out of Japan, even with their economic problems. I'm afraid I'm not convinced that the ability to fail is intrinsic in the ability to succeed. (And one-sided lists of the things invented in the US are not going to change my mind-- I'm looking for a meaningful comparison.)
