Calibre 0.7.53 is a very old version of calibre dating from 2011-Apr-01 (the 0 is the most significant digit of the release not the 7). As BetterRed mentioned, there have been many changes in calibre since that release including moving from Python 2 to Python 3. If you feel up to converting the plugin to Python 3, go ahead though the lack of updates in over a decade suggests that it was not used by many.

If you take a look at the Previous calibre releases page, you will be able to see just how many releases have been made since 0.7.53 was released.
