Only magnetic materials have an effect other than thickness. Aluminium foil is no better than paper.
But steel can metal, nickel or mu-metal will certainly work as a thinner layer. Drinks cans are often aluminium and "tin" food cans often steel. Cans with fruit or fruit juice may be painted on the inside because the fruit juice is acidic.
Stainless steel is odd stuff. Some alloys (four or five main families) of it are magnetic and others are not.
