What Constitutes a Malformed Book?

In trying to figure out what's going on with my Forma's sudden battery drain issue, I keep running across statements that this could be caused by my sideloading badly formatted ebooks that are, perhaps, leading to loops, corrupting the device's database and draining the battery. Assuming this is not so much organic fertilizer, what constitutes a badly formed book? Almost everything I read, I've sideloaded from Calibre after stripping out the publisher's crud formatting and substituting my own. And, before I'm done, I make sure the book completes clean runs of both the Calibre Editor's Check Book tool and the EpubCheck plugin. Shouldn't that prevent me from sideloading badly formed books?
