“Twice-Told Tales” is a series of short story collections by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The stories had all been previously published in magazines and annuals, hence the name. The first volume was published in 1837, a second volume in 1842. (The 2-volume set was published in 1851.) This, the third in the series, published in 1852, was the last such collection published during Hawthorne’s lifetime.
Many of these stories have the tone of fables or allegories, ranging from light-hearted to dark and sinister, with touches of the supernatural to add some chills.)
=============
Nathaniel Hawthorne (né Hathorne; July 4, 1804 – May 19, 1864) was an American novelist, biographer, and short story writer. He is seen as a key figure in the development of American literature for his tales of the nation's colonial history. His fiction works are considered part of the Romantic movement and, more specifically, dark romanticism. Many of his works feature moral metaphors with an anti-Puritan inspiration, centering on the inherent evil and sin of humanity.
Hawthorne’s best-known works include
The Scarlet Letter and
The House of the Seven Gables.
