Yes I've heard the Spanish dialects in Spain almost come across as different languages. Where as in Latin America, the Spanish is mostly similar. Difficulty communication between different national us usually do to accents or the speed in which they speak.
However there are some variances that can really get you in trouble since the meaning of a word in one country is common and accepted but means something completely different in another country. And often that can be a profanity
