Since the two of you aren't having the same issue, I guess I'll chalk this up as another incompatibility with my AMD graphics card. I'd dropped back from the latest driver to the previous "Recommended" version of 7 months ago because of issues with Calibre and its Editor not running at all sometime. With the old drivers, that problem went away. This problem (which I'd never seen before) is similar in that the Calibre process will grab a bit over 10% of the CPU while nothing appears to be happening. Bummer.
