Definitely fantasy. Not quite YA, but not quite "adult" either. Kinda a "soft" fantasy.

The story world of The Book of Isle is heavily influenced by Celtic and Arthurian mythos. If reading them for the first time, I'd recommend reading books 2 through 5 before book 1.

Books 2 through 5 tell an over-arcing story that spans three generations of the same family (book 4 tells a parallel story that introduces a character who plays a large part in book 5). Book 1 is very much a prequel in the "long, long ago gods and mortals lived side by side.... " sense, as it tells how the world of books 2 through 5 came to be.

The language she uses in the books may take a bit to get used to but it was fitting for the setting, IMHO.
