They started in Portland, OR. Having lived in Seattle and Portland, I can tell you the ones in Portland are a lot bigger than most I've seen in the Seattle area, and there's a lot more of them. They're definitely more than just a grocery store here. Their electronics store is a decent size, but their clothing, and home and garden sections are both at least as big if not bigger as the food sections in their larger stores.

Most people don't realize it, but Fred's is the original 'One Stop Shopping' store; they've been doing it for over 80 years, much longer than Walmart. I'll have to look for the 505 next time I'm at one.
