I was just coming here to ask whether anyone elses' Kobos got stuck in an endless 'checking for updates' when trying to sync.

Not sure if it was the firmware itself glitching, or whether Kobo just didn't know how to handle the 'latest' version being a lower version than installed. I am downgrading now so hopefully that should help.
