Yes, it does work on 5.15.1, and no you don't need a serial adapter. Just use something like a tweezer, plug in the device, short TP508 and CR501's right pad (the lone one on the right side that are slightly more rectangular than the others), hold the power button for 15+ seconds while keeping those pins shorted. then you should be able to use either Ygjsz's Windows tool or do it from Linux.
