There exist books with over one hundred chapters. When they are formatted as ebooks, plenty can go wrong. On Harry Harrison's public domain books, some content creator creators publish the first sentence(s) of each chapter as the title of the chapter. Absolutely insane! This is force feeding spoilers into the table of contents before you even get to the actual story. In other cases, the titles given by the original author can also be spoilers. Therefore, it is best to scan past everything and head for the prologue (if any). I tend to skip that too, if I am aware of how much information will be unleashed by the author. The new "Jack Reacher - style" character (Peter Ash) created by Nick Petrie has resulted in seven books, so far. The Drifter is the first book in the series, and since it was my first exposure to the character, I did read the prologue. But, I probably shouldn't have done this. It is sometimes better to not know the background of a character, or prior history.
