Surprise, the problem has disappeared !
So I looked at all the 6 silver screws and the 11 black ones, and found one silver and three black not tight; so tightened them up, fitted the back back, and it now works without problem.
Only remains to serially update the software to 3.4.3, and reinstall the screen-saver hack.

rolgiati, have you ever replaced a K3 battery? I still love my K3 but the battery is going and I may tackle trying to replace it.
