You can do a factory reset, but the thing you need to be aware of is that if the device has been reported as stolen, the serial number will have been blacklisted at Amazon and it won't be possible to register it to an Amazon account. Which means that you won't be able to get books either from Amazon, from a public library that distributes e-Book loans through Amazon, or though any of the 'send to Kindle' options.
