its a gmail account - i know the gmail password!
Anyhow i conclude that kobo password repair server is kaput.
i spotted that my oldest kobo ( aura HD) was signed into a different email accoutn, so I asked kobo to reset the password for that. got the same something went wrong outcome
and that one is not a gmail account so I cant use the sign in with google cheat
the thing about adobe ID was that, if I was persuaded to sign out of kobo on device, would it wipe everything useful, including that ID. so then I have to remember now to fix it
