I don't think it's evil, given how allergic you are. It seems quite sensible. It doesn't hurt them, after all.

Have you considered allergy shots? Not that I think you should try to keep cats if you're allergic, but if they cause you not to be able to breathe... that seems like something worth treating, if possible. Cats are pretty common.

(For that matter, Ricky, have you looked into allergy shots? Do they not work for allergies as severe as yours? They seem to be working [finally!] for my dust mite allergies.)
