The 'read status' badges on the cover itself and the 'more options' button on the cover itself eat up a ton of whitespace on the Cover View page, and shrink the covers a bit much for my liking. Id love to be able to remove those completely and browse by the actual cover in cover view - Even better if the elements can be rearranged to be on top of the cover in a clean way

For Reference:

Kobo Cover View

Kindle Cover View
That would be more of a GUI re-write than a patch!

I haven't looked in detail, but based on the existing patch to increase cover size on the Home screen it *might* be possible to increase the cover widths in MyBooks Cover View by a couple of millimetres by reclaiming some of the wide left/right page margins but it's not possible to change the basic layout of 8 books in 2-rows x 4-columns. So you'll never get a worthwhile size increase to match the Kindle's 3-column layout.

As for combining the cover image with its caption - I think that's a non-starter for a patch.
