Optimizelegibility not working

(Not sure if I should post here or in dev subforum, sorry if I'm in the wrong place.) So, I just updated my device from 4.18 to the newest firmware out of curiosity and to get the Oxford dictionary hassle-free... but I had to give up my trusty text-rendering patch and instead move it to the config file, and I just can't. get it. to stick. To be clear, the right line is in there, in the correct section all right, and I am indeed looking at a kepub file - but no matter what typeface I choose, I can't see a single ligature in my book. What am I doing wrong?? Is there such a thing as a conflicting patch still? I tried editing the file with both Notepad++ and (in a moment of desperation) standard Windows Notepad, and I've power cycled the device...and my other config options are still displaying correctly. Am sad and almost want to go back to paper books for the weekend. Help :(
