I don't think it was pointless. It was just a replacement for the Aura 2, their budget eReader. I think Kobo's mistake was selling it for $100 and rarely putting it on sale, while the Clara was often put on sale for as low as $90. It also matches the Tolino Page 2 and I think it was made partly for the sake of consistency between Kobo's two lines of eReaders.
