Both old Bamboo and earlier serial tablet Wacom and current Wacom EMR are pressure sensitive via the pen. I have three Wacom: A USB Bamboo, Lenovo X201 with finger touch and Wacom pen and the reMarkable using Wacom EMR. All are pressure sensitive via the pen.
I believe you still need some circuitry in the machine to receive the pressure information from the pen.

Don't know if it's actually related to the device thickness though.
