And I do agree that you don't need a Kindle if your goal is to run KOReader.

The question is what do you want to do with a Kindle that you cannot do with a different brand Reader? With other brands, you don't need to jailbreak. You don't need to walk on eggshells in case you botch the jailbreak. You don't need to buy in hopes you can jailbreak and then return it when you cannot.

Overall, a Kindle for jailbrekers is a crap shoot where the Kindle is crap.
Agreed. I didn't buy mine because it was jailbreakable, any more than I buy books because they are easily photocopyable. This is not a problem for me in particular because I use it strictly as a reading device (which is, after all, all it's any good at, by design). If I wanted to hack it I'd get a Kobo, definitely.

If Amazon goes under suddenly I'll be in a bit of trouble given the amount of stuff on it which is KFX-only which I haven't bothered to download in other formats, but if *that* happens there will be such a political shitstorm as you have never seen in the mobile space, and I'm fairly sure people with books will come out of the resulting shitstorm still in possession of the books, Amazon's risible claim that they're only licensed notwithstanding (even if they are only licensed, the license does not say that if the licensor goes under all your books vanish! the obligation to provide them would be passed on to whoever bought Amazon out of bankruptcy). (Even if the worst happens, you're not likely to lose books published by major publishers, who presumably won't want to lose customers' good will by taking hundreds of books from each of them all at once: and they'd definitely know about this not only because their single largest sales channel had just disappeared but because a lot of their own staff would be directly affected, as owners of Kindles themselves. Who knows what Amazon's own imprint would do, since in that scenario it would have gone under too: a good reason to not buy stuff from *that*...)
