NickelMenu is not dependent on kobopatch'd firmware and should work with the stock OS.

Did your device auto reboot after copying KoboRoot.tgz into KOBOeReader/.kobo and ejecting it?

If not, check that you copied the .tgz file to the (dot) .kobo directory.
