I also have several custom columns, but they have nothing to do with genres or book types, because I read novels almost exclusively anyway. I have no fanfic, short stories, magazines or comics in my library. Nor documents, those I keep in a folder outside Calibre.
One custom column indicates which books are on which devices, one indicates which books I want to read more than others and so on.
