It's probably because 1264 is a multiple of 16. Most video compression techiques divide images into 16x16 squares, so displays tend to be multiples of 16 pixels. Although an e-reader isn't used for watching video, it's probably more efficient for things like image scaling when you're looking at book covers full screen.
