I sometimes get limited time $5 off deals after reading a book for other books by the same author/publisher. I assume that is with the blessings of the publisher, and yeah, I've taken them up on it on occasion.
As it is, publishers do opt to put some of their back list on sale (simultaneously on the main ebook sellers). It's not Amazon doing it.
I assume Points are meant to function the way credit cards give you cash back and that sort of thing. Applied psychology to keep you buying things you don't neccessarily need.
