For at least the last two weeks most Spectator articles have no content, just the brief article summary that appears under the titles.
But each article has the invitation to LOGIN or SUBSCRIBE. So obviously a subscription is now required, at least for the current recipe.
I could be mistaken, but I believe there was once a recipe that allowed for a login.
I do have a subscription (for web and mobile apps) but I do like the convenience of reading on a Kindle for my morning trip to the coffee shop! And, as with other things like The New York Times, I hate having to pay twice for the same content, once for web/apps, and again for Kindle.
I long for the day that a Kindle subscription would come with all-digital access. It does for the Washington Post, at the same or lower price than digital access alone. But then of course they're both Bezos products!
I wouldn't even mind paying a little extra for a Kindle+digital-access subscription so the publishers can recoup what they lose in Amazon fees.
One can only hope.
