Thomas Clark Hinkle (1876–1949) was an American novelist who specialized primarily in children's western dog and horse stories. He produced some 40 fiction titles and one non-fiction title. His children's books were frequently used as supplemental reading in schools in the 1940s and 1950s and many titles were widely reprinted. This particular title was published posthumously.

Dapple Gray is a wholesome children's western horse adventure. The worst your child will experience is a teeny tiny bit o' cowboy cussin', i.e. the word "daggone" appears a number of times.
