Moral of the story for me, for now: email books through calibre using the regular, not the "free" kindle address and hope that keeps working and that the Oasis is connected to Wi-Fi at home when I usually email books to it.
I also have newsfeeds automatically emailed daily to the free kindle address to avoid any charges. So there isn't any risk there of incurring any expense. Some news files can be rather large.
