Some of us used programs on punched cards. Some of us were allowed to punch our own cards.
A CRT based editor and 8" floppies was a huge step-up, but I was too poor to personally own a computer till 1987. My company in 1980 owned computers, but I didn't get to keep any when I left in 1983.
