The highlights I add to books are overwhelmingly edit points. I will do those at the same time that I edit the book for other reasons. I would need a more compelling reason to disable replacements being treated as new books. Also for my workflow, almost all editing takes place before the ePub leaves the intake library and gets sent to my ereader.

My workflow very seldom calls for setting the option so less effort for me in the long run and comes closer to a null therblig operation.
