Yes, really. The conversion code is built into the kobo extended device driver, which handles wired connections. The wireless device is a different driver and isn't capable of doing the conversion.

I think you can get kepubs over the wireless device driver by:
  • Installing the "KePub Output" plugin.
  • Converting your book(s) to KePub, which adds the KePub format to the book in calibre's library.
  • Adding kepub (or whatever the extension is) to the permitted output formats in the wireless driver plugin ("configure" the SmartDevice device interface plugin).
  • Pulling the book to the device with KoReader. For this to work, KoReader must accept the extra formats specification from the wireless driver.

Whether this is worth the trouble I can't say.
