I haven't used VoiceView for awhile, but never experienced these issues. There is of course an intentional sound and pause to indicate page turn, but it should not interfere with reading the text.
Perhaps there is an issue with a corrupt book that indexer task is stuck on, and sucking CPU cycles and causing this. Search for '.' (period) and see if it returns list of book(s) yet to be indexed. Though it seems unlikely to be the case for 2 different Kindles.
By any chance are these side loaded books? It shouldn't matter, unless of course it does.
