I suspect it's a security issue. To me, if you have a lock code on your phone you should be able to do nothing with the phone except unlock it until it is unlocked. Unfortunately, it sometimes creates problems such as the one (related in a post earlier in this thread) I had when answering my calls (it took so long to unlock the phone and then answer the call that I often missed the call).

However, a compromise might be to allow you to designate certain items to appear on the screen (such as the time and the battery level) even when the phone is locked. I know that with Android you can designate what kind of access the various apps have. On my flip phone the time, date, battery level (as a percentage) and notifications (in the form of a number in a circle) on the outer screen.

It seems like it is often change for the sake of change. An example of this is Windows 8, where they changed long-standard ways of doing things.

As an example, up until then to close an app/program you clicked on the X in the upper right-hand corner. This was the way it was going back to Windows 1. Then, with Windows 8 the X was gone and I had to figure out that you had to drag the window to the top of the screen to close it. It might be okay when working with a touch screen but not when you are using a mouse and keyboard.

Concerning the notification sound, I had the same problem. I used to carry my phone in my left-hand pants pocket and even at full volume I often had trouble hearing notifications. My solution was to put the phone in my shirt pocket where I could easily hear it if I turn the volume to the max.
